Poll: Illegal immigration concerns voters

WASHINGTON, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Democratic and Republican strategists say many U.S. voters continue to believe illegal immigrants are abusing government benefits.

That belief stems more from economic uncertainty than from culture clashes, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

A new poll for National Public Radio found voters more likely to side with the Democrats than Republicans by a wide margin on issues of war, taxes, spending, healthcare, the economy and health insurance for children, the Post reported.

But on immigration, the GOP held a 49 percent to 44 percent lead in the survey conducted by the Democratic polling firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and the Republican firm Public Opinion Strategies.

Concerns that illegal immigrants are abusing government benefits are of particular concern to white voters in working-class districts in Kansas, Indiana, North Carolina, Massachusetts and New Hampshire -- states that gave the Democrats control of the U.S. House last year.
