WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush is requesting $500 million to help fund security cooperation with Mexico and Central America.
A White House statement Monday said the funds would help the United States and Latin American nations break up drug smuggling and curb gang activity.
βThe president greatly appreciates the bold actions (Mexican) President Felipe Calderon has taken in confronting these dangers and his desire to raise our relationship to a new level of cooperation,β the statement said.
The $500 million is slated to be added to a $1.4 billion federal program to enhance security cooperation with Mexico.
