WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush is requesting $500 million to help fund security cooperation with Mexico and Central America.

A White House statement Monday said the funds would help the United States and Latin American nations break up drug smuggling and curb gang activity.

β€œThe president greatly appreciates the bold actions (Mexican) President Felipe Calderon has taken in confronting these dangers and his desire to raise our relationship to a new level of cooperation,” the statement said.

The $500 million is slated to be added to a $1.4 billion federal program to enhance security cooperation with Mexico.
