17 wounded in Israeli prison riot

JERUSALEM, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- A riot at Israel's Ketziot Prison near the border with Egypt left 15 guards and two security prisoners wounded, a report says.

One of the prisoners was critically wounded and the other was only in slightly better condition, Haaretz reported Monday.

The prisoners rioted Sunday during a routine search by the guards. Anything that was not bolted down was used a projectile and hurled at the guards and 10 tents were set ablaze, the report said.

It took nearly an hour for the guards to establish control over the roughly 1,000 security prisoners who took part in the riots.

The Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva released that the critically injured prisoner is suffering from a head wound from a non-lethal crowd dispersal device fired by guards.
