Soldier loses kids in car accident

DALLAS, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Army Spc. John Austin Johnson survived five improvised explosive blasts in Iraq but two of his three children died on a trip to visit him in a Texas hospital.

Johnson was in a San Antonio army hospital, recovering from brain injuries he sustained during the fifth improvised explosive blast he survived during his two years in Iraq, The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday.

Last weekend, his wife Lisa and three young children set out from El Paso to visit him, when a strong gust of wind hit their car. Lisa Johnson sharply turned the steering wheel, overcompensating.

The Johnsons’ car went off the highway and rolled five times, killing the couple's two youngest children and leaving their 9-year-old son Tyler on life support, the newspaper said.

Strong Christian faith and help from the Dallas/Fort Worth United Service Organizations are helping the couple through the ordeal, friends said, and a fund has been established in their name.
