NEW YORK, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. presidential hopeful John Edwards' campaign has criticized Democratic rival Sen. Hillary Clinton's fundraiser in New York's Chinatown.
The Los Angeles Times said many people of apparently modest means contributed between $500 to $2,300 to Clinton, the current Democratic front-runner. The Times said it could not trace one-third of the listed donors.
David Bonior, Edwards' campaign manager, went after Clinton, the New York Daily News reported.
"Many Clinton campaign contributions are raising eyebrows again," he said in a statement.
Howard Wolfson, a Clinton advisor, said the campaign returned $7,000 in contributions it could not confirm were legal. But he said the campaign "does not ethnically profile donors."
Two of the donors told the News they gave money to Clinton because they want her to win. Hsiao Yen Wang, a nursing assistant married to a cook, described donating $1,000 as a "pleasure."
"I would like to see the United States have the first woman President," she said.
