Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani and Lance Cpl. Stephen B. Tatum face charges stemming from the 2005 killing of 24 civilians in Haditha, Iraq, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.
Chessani, 42, of Colorado, and Tatum, 26, of Oklahoma, are the only two of eight initial defendants in the case ordered to undergo court-martial so far, the Times said.
Chessani is charged with dereliction of duty and Tatum with involuntary manslaughter. Tatum's lawyers have said the case "imperils every young Marine and soldier who faces a split-second decision in combat."
The court-martial decisions were made Friday by Lt. Gen. James N. Mattis, who has yet to announce a decision about Sgt. Frank D. Wuterich, who was initially charged with 12 counts of murder.
Three women and seven children were among the 24 civilians killed in Haditha when Marines said they were searching for insurgents, who were not found.
