Security inadequate for Bhutto return

KARACHI, Pakistan, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto said they were outraged at the government for not providing adequate security for her homecoming.

Karachi police say least 125 people were killed and dozens injured Thursday when a grenade and suicide bomb went off during a parade celebrating Bhutto's return, Voice of America reported Friday.

Sen. Latif Khosa of Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party said electronic bomb jammers operated by police near Bhutto's motorcade didn't appear to be working.

Khosa said just minutes before the two blasts Bhutto had left the unprotected roof of her armored truck.

"It was the human shield surrounding her that unfortunately lost their lives," Khosa told Voice of America.

Witnesses reported security was tight at the start of the procession but weakened as the motorcade took several hours to make its way through the crowd of supporters estimated at more than 150,000.

Supporters complained that Pakistan's government had promised "foolproof" security for the former prime minister's return, the Voice of America report said.
