WASHINGTON, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is reconsidering a floor vote on a resolution accusing Turkey of genocide against Armenians after World War I.
The resolution declaring Turkey had executed hundreds of thousands of Armenians passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which angered the Turkish government, a U.S. ally that provides staging for military operations and support in Iraq.
President George Bush soundly denounced the resolution and on Wednesday said Congress had better things to do than "sorting out the historical record of the Ottoman Empire," the New York Times reported.
Later Wednesday, Pelosi told reporters she wasn't as adamant about having the full House vote on the non-binding measure.
"Whether it will come up or not and what the action will be remains to be seen," Pelosi said.
Backers of the resolution said they would push ahead despite mounting opposition and try to rally support for the resolution, the Times said.
