Consul takes custody of deportees' son

MIAMI, D.C., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- The Mexican Consulate in Miami has been given temporary custody of an 11-year-old boy whose parents were deported without him.

The parents were detained after a traffic stop Sept. 22, The Miami Herald reported. They were sent back to Mexico.

A spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement said that the parents have been found in Mexico. Both ICE and consular officials said that the boy will be returned to his parents.

Herman Martinez, an immigration advocate, got in touch with the consulate after he learned of the boy's plight.

''He carried a picture of his mom in a folder with all his papers and he showed it to me, and that gesture almost made me cry,'' Martínez said.

The boy was in school when his parents were detained. Officials say that they acknowledged having a child but said he was with a relative.

The family moved to Chicago from Mexico two years ago and recently relocated to Homestead, Fla.
