Brownback expected to leave GOP race

TOPEKA, Kan., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., reportedly will abandon his bid for the GOP 2008 presidential nomination, citing lack of money and lackluster poll numbers.

Brownback is expected to announce his withdrawal from the race Friday in Topeka, Kan., The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

The two-term senator is a favorite among conservatives for his stance against abortion and same-sex marriage.

However, he has been unable to rise above single-digit support in polls. A Des Moines Register Poll this month showed Brownback claiming support from just 2 percent of those polled -- far behind the 29 support among GOP caucus-goers for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

In the most recent campaign finance reports, Brownback reported $94,000 cash on hand, far less than any of his opponents. In all, he raised less than $4 million, compared with $62 million for Romney and $47 million for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
