WASHINGTON, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush said Wednesday his welcome of Tibet's Dalai Lama wasn't likely to "severely" damage relations with China.
At a White House news conference, Bush said he understood China had warned of strained relations in the run-up to the Tibetan spiritual leader's visit to Washington Tuesday and Wednesday. But said he hadn't sprung any surprises on Beijing by meeting privately with the Dalai Lama Tuesday and attending the ceremony where he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal Wednesday.
"I told the Chinese president, President Hu, that I was going to go to the ceremony," Bush said. "I wanted to make sure he understood exactly why I was going, and they didn't like it of course, but I don't think it's going to damage -- severely damage -- relations."
In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said Bush was misguided.
"The Dalai Lama is not a simple or a pure religious figure. He is a political exile who undertakes secessionist activities abroad," Liu said. "We oppose meetings between him and other leaders."
Bush is scheduled to visit Beijing on Nov. 19.
