A 'warm Clinton welcome' for Romney

CLINTON, Iowa, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney got "a warm Clinton welcome" during a campaign stop in Iowa Wednesday -- in Clinton, Iowa, as it happened.

A local GOP official who introduced Romney to a crowd of about 100 offered "a warm Clinton welcome" to the former Massachusetts governor -- who went on to mention the name of Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton five times during a 25-minute talk, The Des Moines (Iowa) Register reported.

In particular, Romney criticized the healthcare proposal being promoted by the junior senator from New York.

"I don’t want to put people on government health insurance, which is what Hillary Clinton wants to do," he said.

Romney accused Clinton of wanting to raise Social Security taxes, and said she "couldn’t get elected president of France, let alone president of the United States."

Clinton campaign spokesman Mark Daley pushed back.

"Given Gov. Romney’s history of flip-flopping, we should expect his endorsement in the coming days," said Daley. "Gov. Romney fails to mention that Sen. Clinton currently leads him and every other Republican in several states (President) George Bush carried in 2004, including Florida, Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia."
