Rock kills woman on Norwegian highway

LEIKANGER, Norway, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- A Norwegian woman died Tuesday morning when a large rock rolled down a mountainside and crashed through her windshield.

The woman was alone in the car when it was hit by the rock, described as being about 18 inches in diameter, Aftenposten reported. She was between Sogn and Leikanger on Highway 55, a state road that hugs the Sognfjord at the foot of a steep mountainside.

Reports said the woman was from Sogn.

The section of highway where the crash occurred is known for rock- and landslides.

Construction is almost completed on a tunnel that is scheduled to open in December.
