WARSAW, Poland, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Two Polish peacekeepers were injured Monday in Iraq in another attack apparently meant to influence upcoming Polish elections, Polish Radio said.

Polish authorities in Warsaw said they believe the attacks by Shiite groups in Iraq were aimed at policies of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his twin brother Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, less than a week before Poland’s parliamentary elections, the Polish News.pl Web site said Monday.

The Kaczynskis’ ruling Law and Justice Party has been supportive of U.S. policy in Iraq, while most of opposition parties want to see some 1,000 Polish troops out of Iraq.

Two Polish soldiers were slightly injured in the Monday attack on military convoys and bases.

Early this month, Poland’s ambassador to Iraq was injured and one of his bodyguards was killed in a car bomb attack.
