NEW YORK, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- A growing number of independent media operators are broadcasting the message of al-Qaida as they seek to appeal to angry young Muslims.
The constellation of operators translates Arab screeds for a Western audience, primarily young American and European Muslims angered by the war in Iraq and the image of Islam under attack, The New York Times reported Monday.
Terrorism experts at West Point estimate about 100 English language sites offer militant Islamic views, including the Web site of Samir Khan, 21, who operates from his parents' home in North Carolina, the Times reported.
Khan, who was born in Saudi Arabia and grew up in Queens in New York City, uses his blog to promote the messages of Osama bin Laden and other violent Muslim extremists, the Times reported.
Nothing suggests Khan is conspiring with militant leaders or breaking any laws. Khan told the Times he is doing his "best to speak the truth and, even if it annoys the disbelievers, the truth must be preached.”
