Fidel Castro chats live with Hugo Chavez

HAVANA, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Fidel Castro was heard on live television during the weekend for the first time since falling ill last year and turning over Cuba's government to his brother.

The ailing Castro was heard speaking to Venezuelan leader and ardent supporter Hugo Chavez, Granma newspaper reported Monday.

The Sunday conversation marked the 40th anniversary of the death of Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara.

The program broadcast on Cuban television also reportedly contained a short video of the two leaders speaking.

Castro turned over authority to his younger brother Raul in July 2006 after announcing his had a gastro-intestinal illness that required surgery.
