Ailing Greek archbishop to stay in Miami

MIAMI, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All Greece has returned to his temporary Miami apartment after cancer treatment at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The archbishop has been staying in Miami since Aug. 18 in order to receive medical treatment at the hospital, the Athens News Agency reported Monday.

He was released from Jackson Memorial a few days after a liver transplant was aborted due to his cancer spreading to the abdominal cavity.

Christodoulos said that he felt well, and needed some time for the injuries to heal.

He also stressed that he wanted to return to Greece, "but necessity is keeping me here."

When asked if he still has confidence in surgeon Andreas Tzakis, the Archbishop said, "Certainly. Mr. Tzakis is an eminent professional, who has provided the necessary explanations to the Greek people."

Christodoulos also added that he would remain in the United States for treatment because, "We are in a big medical center of international repute here in Miami, and it would not be good for me to leave and search elsewhere for a solution to the problem."
