Poll: Brown would have won election

LONDON, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A new poll shows British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's hold on political power remains secure despite his decision not to call an autumn general election.

The Daily Telegraph poll shows Brown would have won a general election with a comfortable majority and the Conservatives would not have gained key seats from Brown's Labor Party, The Telegraph reported Saturday.

Brown canceled the November election last week after polls showed the Conservatives ahead, the British newspaper reported.

In the newest poll, Brown's Labor Party led the Conservatives on key issues such as the economy, leadership, and trustworthiness, and put Brown ahead of Conservative David Cameron on the question of who would make the better prime minister.

For its survey, The Telegraph interviewed 1,077 people who said they were likely to vote in the next general election.
