Missile shield talks to resume in April

MOSCOW, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Russia and the United States are to determine what countries are a missile threat and meet again in April to continue talks on a European defense shield.

"If we manage to work out the criteria, it will become clear that the Third Site is not needed in the way that it was planned, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday after the two countries failed to resolve their dispute about the need for the shield, RIA Novosti reported Saturday.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates met Friday near Moscow for tense talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russia again urged the United States to freeze plans to build missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic, while Rice vowed the United States meant Russian no harm and intended the shield as a defense against Iran and other countries hostile to the United States.
