Grand Canyon fall kills girl, 4

GRAND CANYON, Ariz., Oct. 10 (UPI) -- A 4-year-old Arizona girl has been killed at Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park after falling 450 feet from an unfenced observation area.

The unidentified girl and her family were on the South Rim midday Tuesday when the child slipped over, The Arizona Republic reported Wednesday.

The girl's father scrambled down to her and injured his ankle, but continued and attempted to resuscitate the child. Rescue crews arrived soon afterward and declared the girl dead at the scene, the report said.

Park spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge said it was the second death from a fall at the park this year, and that the girl was the youngest victim ever.
