Report: Others had access to Madeline

LISBON, Portugal, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Portuguese police reportedly have new evidence indicating additional people had access to the apartment where young Madeline McCann disappeared last May.

Contrary to the statements of Madeline’s parents, the investigation has uncovered the possibility the children of other British tourists were in the room that evening and their parents may have been going in and out while the McCann’s were at dinner, the Times of London said Tuesday.

The revelation, which was reported by Portuguese media sources, throws a new possibility into the investigation that one of those other adults could have had something to do with Madeline’s disappearance. Thus far, the McCann’s have told investigators their children were alone in the room and that only they had checked on them.

The Times said the new angle could put more pressure on Russell O’Brien, who was among the dinner guests with the McCanns. He claims he checked on his own daughter shortly before Madeline was discovered to be missing.

The news comes as a new lead detective takes over the case. Paulo Rebelo, assistant national director of the Judicial Police took command of the probe Monday night.
