NOVI SAD, Serbia, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Police arrested 56 neo-Nazis who clashed with riot teams that tried to protect an anti-fascist march in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad.
At least four people were injured, including a Belgrade B92 television cameraman and the head of Novi Sad’s Helsinki Human Rights committee, when about 80 neo-Nazis hurled stones and bottles on several hundred citizens protesting against the rise of fascism in Serbia, the Serbian B92 radio-television reported Monday.
Ranko Koncar, a peace activist, addressing the anti-fascist gathering Sunday in Novi Sad, 50 miles northwest Belgrade, said Serbians must support tolerance, equality and their future within the European Union.
Police arrested 11 Slovak nationals who traveled to Novi Sad Sunday carrying Nazi insignia and propaganda leaflets, the Serbian news agency Tanjug said.
In Belgrade, police arrested eight Bulgarian neo-Nazis who tried to travel to Novi Sad, Tanjug said.
