Ex-PM Chretien home after surgery

OTTAWA, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Former Canadian prime minister Jean Chretien was back home in Ottawa Monday, five days after emergency quadruple heart bypass surgery.

Bruce Hartley, Chretien's executive assistant, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., the 73-year-old politician had been released from Montreal Heat Institute. Doctors said a full recovery from the 78-minute operation could take three months, CBC News said.

Chretien was hospitalized Wednesday after complaining of discomfort at a charity golf tournament. He was found to have unstable angina, which is chest pain resulting from obstructed arteries that can be a warning sign a heart attack could be imminent.
