ZAGREB, Croatia, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- A NATO committee has accepted a motion that Albania, Croatia and Macedonia should be invited to join the alliance, Croatian media said Monday.

The defense and security committee of NATO’s parliamentary assembly at its meeting Sunday in Reykjavik, Iceland, passed the draft resolution to be adopted at the April summit of the NATO in Romania, the Croatian news agency HINA said.

The resolution calls on NATO member countries, meeting next spring in Bucharest, to invite the three countries to begin membership negotiations.

The resolution next goes before a plenary meeting of the NATO annual parliamentary assembly Tuesday in Reykjavik, HINA said.

Croatia, Albania and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia have been participating in NATO’s membership action plan, aimed at helping countries in meeting membership standards.

NATO currently has 26 members.
