Britain to provide asylum for Iraqi staff

LONDON, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Prime Minister Gordon Brown reportedly plans to offer asylum in Britain to Iraqis in danger because of working with British forces.

Brown is to make the announcement Monday in an address to Parliament on Iraq, The Times of London reported Saturday.

The asylum offer would apply to interpreters currently working for the British military who have done so for at least 12 months and retroactively to those who have left their jobs. Iraqis who do not want to move to Britain would be given financial assistance if they need to relocate inside Iraq or want to move to another country in the region.

Iraqis who have worked for the British military in other capacities would also be given assistance, the Times said, although the details of that program remain unclear.

Denmark, which recently pulled its troops out of Iraq, granted asylum to 60 Iraqis who had worked with its military.
