U.S. Embassy in Baghdad may be delayed

WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., said contractor deficiencies at the new U.S. Embassy in Baghdad could delay the facility's planned opening.

Lantos said in a letter to the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State that the delays are harmful to the security and standards of living for the 1,000 employees who are waiting to move into the new compound, Alsumaria satellite TV reported Friday.

The embassy, which is estimated to cost about $600 million, will be the largest embassy in the world upon completion.
