SANTIAGO, Chile, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Family members of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet were arrested Thursday on charges relating to the deceased strongman's bank accounts.
Among those detained were Pinochet's widow, as well as a number of former associates, El Merucio reported online.
In all, 23 people were arrested on charges of "misusing" state funds during Pinochet's 17-yea reign (1973-1990).
The funds allegedly misappropriated from state coffers were deposited in numerous U.S. banks, including the Washington-based Riggs Banks, which was bought eventually bought out by PNC Bank.
Though Pinochet never served time for his alleged crimes, he was accused of ordering the deaths of numerous left-wing dissidents during his tenure. In all, some 3,000 people were believed killed by the Pinochet regime.
