San Diego sinkhole forces evacuations

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- At least one house was heavily damaged as a sinkhole engulfed a heavily traveled road Wednesday in a San Diego hillside neighborhood.

The city brought in a number of experts to assess the situation in the La Jolla area, Michael Aguirre, San Diego city attorney, said during a news briefing.

Crews were repairing water lines when the road buckled, he said. Homes in the area were being evacuated.

No injuries were reported, CNN said.

"We don't believe there is an immediate threat to the safety and health of the residents," Aguirre said.

Power and gas lines were being shut down, he said.

He said the sinkhole problem has affected the area since about the 1960s.
