Russia bans import of Polish fish meal

WARSAW, Poland, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Russia has banned imports of fish meal, mainly used as fodder, from Poland and has threatened to stop importing Polish vegetables.

Sergej Dankwert, an official of the Russian veterinary agency, claimed an inspection established the Polish fish meal, usually made from ground, dried fish, included bone and meat meal, the Polish New.pl Web site reported Wednesday.

Dankwert said mixing meat and bone meal with fish meal is forbidden because “mad cow” disease might infect fish meal.

He said the ban is to stay in force until Russian veterinarians investigation the Polish system of export controls.
