Four Hamas police officers killed by blast

GAZA, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Palestinian sources said a Hamas-aligned militant was killed by a missile fired from an Israeli military aircraft near the Rafah crossing.

The incident Tuesday night occurred as some Palestinians claimed Israeli forces were conducting house-to-house searches in the area and uprooting trees with tanks, the Jerusalem Post reported Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a car explosion outside a Hamas security headquarters building in Gaza City killed four Hamas police officers and injured two others, hospital and security officials said.

Hamas initially blamed the attack on Israel but later said the cause of the blast was unknown.

The Israeli military denied involvement in the attack.

"Investigations are still under way to determine what caused the blast, who was behind it and who was killed," a Hamas statement said.

Elsewhere, one Hamas activist died and two others were injured when a tunnel they were attempting to dig under the Erez crossing collapsed on top of them.
