The helicopter burst into flames as it descended, coming down in the water. A Royal Canadian Mounted Police airplane and search vessel were sent to the area, along with a search-and-rescue helicopter from the Canadian Forces base in Goose Bay.

The pilot had been working for Baywater Uranium Corp., a Vancouver company carrying out exploration in the area. The helicopter belonged to Newfoundland Helicopters.

The body was flown to St. John’s, Newfoundland, for autopsy.
