NEW YORK, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The New York-based National Action Network of the Rev. Al Sharpton is reportedly undergoing an investigation of its fundraising.
The New York Post reported it had learned that the office of New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is conducting an administrative review of the organization for failure to comply with state requirements.
A spokesman for Cuomo told the Post his office has been unable to find a single financial filing by the National Action Network.
New York law requires the group to submit periodic reports to the Attorney General's Charity Bureau on fundraising income, expenses and executive salaries.
National Director Charlie King attributes the failure to an electrical fire at the group's headquarters that damaged all its records.
The blaze happened on the day that Sharpton filed papers to run in the 2004 presidential election.
"It takes time for our accountants to reconstruct those files," King told the Post, adding that some of the paperwork had been filed and more will be forthcoming.
