Other Russia party chooses Kasparov

MOSCOW, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Russian chess champion Garry Kasparov has been named his party's presidential candidate though his name is unlikely to be on the official ballot.

The Other Russia, an alliance of government opposition groups, Sunday chose Kasparov for the March 2008 presidential election and confirmed a list of 450 candidates for the December Duma elections, The Moscow Times reported Monday.

"I will seek victory and will not turn off this path," Kasparov told the Other Party congress after winning 379 of 494 delegates.

The Other Russia's candidates are unlikely to make the ballots since only registered political parties can nominate candidates and the Other Russia has yet to apply for party status, The Times reported.

Other Russia nominees said they would demand the Central Elections Commission include them on ballots and vowed a write-in campaign if necessary.
