College athlete dies from gunshot

MEMPHIS, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Classes were canceled Monday at the University of Memphis following the shooting death of Tigers defensive lineman Taylor Bradford.

The 21-year-old football player was shot Sunday night while driving his car on the northeastern edge of campus near a student housing facility, The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported.

Authorities said Bradford kept driving after he was shot until his car struck a tree. He was taken to Regional Medical Center where he died.

Memphis police were trying to establish a motive for the shooting and had no suspects in custody early Monday.

Because the suspect in the shooting remained at large, administrators canceled classes, notifying students by e-mail and text message.

Athletic officials said Tuesday's scheduled football game against Marshall would proceed as scheduled but would include a moment of silence will be held in Bradford's honor prior to kickoff.

"Our entire football team is deeply saddened by the loss of Taylor," Memphis Coach Tommy West said on the team Web site. "He was well respected and a popular member of our team. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."
