BAGHDAD, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- The U.S. military commander in Iraq says it's too soon tell if Iran is making good on a pledge to cut off weapons and funding to extremists in Iraq.
Army Gen. David H. Petraeus said Iranian officials pledged their support last month in a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.
Since then, there has been a minor drop in attacks associated with Shiite militants but nothing significant, Petraeus told the Times. "It really is wait-and-see time right now," he said.
The Iranians repeatedly have denied they are providing weapons and money to insurgents. All sides, however, are concerned by the recent spike in clashes in southern Iraq, where Shiite factions with ties to Iran seek greater political influence in the oil-rich region, the Times reported.
