Tropical Storm Karen weakens

MIAMI, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Karen lost strength Friday night as it moved north in the Atlantic.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami predicted that the storm would weaken to a tropical depression Saturday.

Another storm, Tropical Depression 14, formed in the Atlantic. At 11 p.m. EDT, the storm was 265 miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands and moving west at about 6 mph. Forecasters said the depression might strengthen to a tropical storm Saturday.

At 11 p.m., Karen was 660 miles east of the Leeward Islands and heading west-northwest at 9 mph. The storm was a very large one with tropical storm winds extending 205 miles from the center, but maximum sustained winds at the center were about 40 mph and expected to weaken.
