OROVILLE, Calif., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- A student who allegedly took hostages at gunpoint at a California high school Friday has been taken into custody, the school district reported on its Web site.

"The gunman is in custody at Las Plumas High School," the Oroville Union High School District's home page read. "There were no injuries by anyone involved."

The sheriff's office said the suspect was a 17-year-old male student, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Media reports indicated the student walked into the high school Friday morning, fired shots from a handgun into the air then took students and a teacher hostage in the school's band room.

The incident lasted about an hour, the newspaper said.

While the high school remained under lockdown, the district said it was allowing "a non-emergency student release for all other district schools" which were under lockdown as well.

A reporter on the scene told CNN that public safety officials described the gunman as a "disgruntled" student.
