CAN THO, Vietnam, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Rescue workers searched the wreckage Thursday of a bridge that collapsed while under construction in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam.

Nhan Dan, the official newspaper of the Communist Party, reported that at least 64 people had been confirmed dead. Another 180 people were receiving treatment for injuries.

President Nguyen Minh Triet visited the disaster site Thursday morning.

About 150 workers were on the bridge and 100 underneath it when a 300-foot span failed Wednesday morning, the Vietnam News Agency reported. Tons of concrete collapsed.

The foundations of the bridge near Can Tho might have been weakened by heavy rains, experts said. Rain also hampered rescue efforts.
