JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- South Africa’s head prosecutor reportedly obtained an arrest warrant for the national police chief in the days before he was suspended by President Thabo Mbeki.

Media reports said Friday that Vusi Pikoli also obtained a search-and-seizure warrant against Chief Jackie Selebi, whom Pikoli’s office reportedly has suspected of links to organized crime in South Africa.

The Independent Online said Friday that Pikoli’s National Prosecuting Authority was set to carry out the raid and arrest but was halted by government officials.

At the same time, police officials told the South African newspaper East London Dispatch that they knew nothing of the reported warrants.
