WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Japan reportedly wants North Korea kept on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism until it resolves the issue of the abductions of Japanese nationals.
The plea came from newly appointed Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura during talks in Washington with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the Kyodo news service reported Friday.
Komura and Rice talked on the sides of the U.S.-sponsored meeting on climate change which opened Thursday. Those sessions coincided with the opening of the meeting in Beijing of the six-nation talks on North Korea’s nuclear program. The Beijing talks involve normalization of U.S. and Japan relations with North Korea and North Korea’s demand that it be taken off the terrorism sponsor list.
The report said Rice promised to consider Japan’s position. Japan is concerned the United States may remove North Korea from its list without a resolution of its abduction issue if there is progress at the Beijing talks.
