WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- The United States has offered access to lawyers to 14 “high-value” terrorism suspects locked up at Guantanamo Bay.
The move reported Friday by The Washington Post could open a door for them to challenge their captivity in court.
The Post reported that the prisoners include Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The detainees will be given a form requesting that the American Bar Association find them an attorney who will represent them free of charge.
The U.S. government has argued against legal representation for high-value detainees such as Mohammed due to the chance that classified facts about the CIA detention program and its interrogation tactics could be revealed.
