Israel fighter jets sent to Syrian border

JERUSALEM, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Israel sent fighter jets to the Syrian border Thursday in response to a report of aircraft near the border on the Syrian side.

After the Israeli Air Force determined that the Syrian planes were not attacking, the fighters returned to their base, Ynetnews.com reported.

Relations between Israel and Syria remain tense following reports that Israeli planes bombed a Syrian nuclear facility. On Saturday, the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, Israeli jets responded to reports of a plane disappearing from radar on the Syrian side of the border. The aircraft was determined later to have crashed.

The Arab-Israeli newspaper al-Sinara reported the two country’s foreign ministers, Tzipi Livni and Walid Moallem, met for an hour Wednesday at the United Nations in New York. Al-Sinara said that Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani arranged the meeting, while Livni’s aides denied it took place, Ynetnews reported.
