WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. John Doolittle, R-Calif., said the Justice Department issued a subpoena Thursday demanding 11 years worth of his records.
The government is investigating ties between Doolittle and imprisoned Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff. In a news release, the congressman’s office said the Justice Department has told five subpoenaed staffers they are not targets of the investigation, but the release said nothing about Doolittle, The Sacramento Bee reported.
Doolittle’s lawyer, in a statement, said the subpoenas "raise serious constitutional issues" on the separation of powers between the executive and legislative branches of government.
Julie Doolittle, the congressman’s wife, had a business, Sierra Dominion Financial Solutions, which received payments totaling $66,000 from Abramoff in 17 months. In April, the FBI raided the Doolittles’ home in Oakton, Va.
