GAZA, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Nine Palestinians were killed Wednesday in the Gaza Strip during a series of aggressive strikes by the Israeli military.

An Israeli Air Force strike on a vehicle traveling through the city of Gaza on Wednesday left five Army of Islam militants dead, while the shelling of a suspected militant cell in the town of Beit Hanun killed three civilians and a Palestinian Resistance Committees militant, Haaretz reported.

A statement from the Israeli military said one of the militants killed in the aerial strike had taken part in the kidnapping of BBC correspondent Alan Johnston earlier this year.

Israel has been intensifying its military actions in the Gaza Strip in response to rocket attacks on Israel that originated from the region.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Wednesday that his nation is preparing for a larger scale military action in the Gaza Strip to completely eliminate the threat.

"One must understand that such on operation is not simple in terms of force (size), the length of time for which we will have to stay (n the Strip), and in terms of the operation limits that the soldiers will encounter," Barak said. "It is very complicated."
