CARSON CITY, Nev., Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Robert Charles Johnson, who escaped from a Colorado correctional facility in 1975, was recaptured by authorities in Gardnerville, Nev., a report said.
The Rocky Mountain News reported Wednesday that the 57-year-old fugitive, who had been serving time in 1975 for his part in a fatal shooting, was arrested this week by U.S. marshals at his Gardnerville home.
Authorities said Johnson had been living under the name Robert Fargo since his escape and finding work as a roofer and a white-water rafting guide.
A clue to his whereabouts came in 1990 when he was arrested for a misdemeanor in California, but Johnson fled the area before his true identity could be established.
In 2005, U.S. marshals learned of a roofer named Robert Fargo who had been fired from his job in California for failing a drug test.
An ensuing investigation found Johnson was once again using the alias and authorities were able to arrest him at his Nevada home on Monday.
Johnson was in police custody awaiting extradition to Colorado.
