Report: Iraqi refugee crisis deepening

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Countries that participated in the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq must do more to help Syria and Jordan with millions of Iraqi refugees, Amnesty International said.

The "deepening humanitarian crisis" largely has been ignored, leaving Syria and Jordan to care for an estimated 2 million Iraqi refugees, said Malcolm Smart, a director of Amnesty International.

An estimated 2.2 million more Iraqis have been displaced by the war but remain in their country with 2,000 being added to the ranks of the displaced each day, U.N. officials have said.

In a report released Monday called "Millions in flight: the Iraqi refugee crisis," Amnesty International urged the international community, particularly those who participated in the invasion, to increase financial aid.

The money desperately is needed for food, medical supplies, shelter, schooling and the resettlement needs of vulnerable people, including victims of torture, the report said.
