WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- An 18-month U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration investigation into illegal steroids from China has resulted in more than 120 arrests, ABC News said Monday.
Unidentified agency sources told the network the arrests were made at 56 illegal lab operations in New York, San Diego, Kansas City, Houston and Providence, R.I.
The materials used to make the anabolic steroids originated from about 30 companies in China, DEA officials said.
Apart from the performance-enhancing steroids, the sweep called Operation Raw Deal also netted human growth hormone and other drugs worth tens of millions of dollars, the report said.
Agents said Internet sites, chat rooms and message rooms were used to market the majority of the drugs to young people and athletes.
Anabolic steroids can cause strokes, blood clots, high blood pressure, heart disease, liver damage and aggressive behavior, the report said.
