
MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich., Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won 39 percent of a presidential poll of registrants to the Michigan Republican Party's island conference Monday.
Romney, the son of a former Michigan governor, came in at No.1 at the Mackinac Island conference and Arizona Sen. John McCain came in second with 26.5 percent of the vote, which was open to delegates to the conference who were also Michigan residents.
The Detroit Free Press said that Texas Rep. Ron Paul finished third with 10.8 percent, just a fraction more than former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who brought in 10.6 percent of the Republican vote.
Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson finished out the top five with 7.2 percent.
Around 980 people participated in the poll conducted for the state GOP by Washington based online political newsletter The Hotline.
The Republican candidates will next return to Michigan for a debate in Dearborn on Oct. 9.
