NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- International donors are likely to resume direct aid to the Palestinian Authority, ending a boycott that began when Hamas came to power, a report says.
The donors met Monday in New York on the margins of the U.N. General Assembly to consider a change in policy since Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed Hamas from the government in June, The Financial Times reported.
A statement endorsed by the Middle East Quartet, made up of the United States, European Union, United Nations and Russia, extends an emergency EU-run aid mechanism that was put in place to protect poor Palestinians during the boycott and expressed hope that a method of resuming direct aid to the government could be set up as well.
Palestinian officials said donors will hopefully recreate an international trust fund that was first established under World Bank administration in December 2003 to help the PA confront its financial crisis, which has since worsened.
The PA reportedly needs more than $1.6 billion to fix its fiscal problems.
