Teens arrested in fire truck theft

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Two North Carolina teens were arrested Saturday, accused of stealing a fire truck from a manufacturing plant.

The suspects -- ages 15 and 16 -- allegedly scaled a fence at the Seagrave Fire Apparatus in York County, started the fire truck and then used it to yank off a gate at the plant’s entrance and drive away, The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported Sunday.

After residents near the plant reported loud noises, a deputy patrolling the area saw a fire truck drive by, lights flashing and sirens blazing, even though there was no fire, the newspaper said.

Police chased the truck for several miles at speeds up to 80 mph until its tires were destroyed by metal strips positioned on a highway. The teens allegedly jumped out of the truck and ran away, but were soon caught by police.
